Banque de l’Habitat du Mali/BHM-SA (BHM) is a limited liability public/private partnership. It benefits from a full banking license and serves to provide financial assistance to the improvement of housing in Mali. Its second main activity is to collect savings and serve as a financial intermediary for the people – particularly in areas where financial and banking systems are not prevalent – in order to allow for the utilisation of scarce resources. The third main activity is to ensure that all banking financial services are available throughout the national territory (and in other countries) including access to credit, to loan advances, to current accounts, etc. The fourth main activity is to manage postal current accounts and savings accounts in all of the locations where there are post offices. The fifth main activity is to define the marketing policy for the implementation of postal current accounts at the savings banks of the Postal Service. The sixth main activity is to participate in various financial, commercial, and real estate operations in order to facilitate development. Since its creation, BHM has distributed thousands of loans for purchasers of homes – the number of loans has tripled in the last four years for double the amount of money. The bank’s share of the credit market for housing construction and renovation remains dominant.
